STILL SKIING: SONORA AND TIOGA PASSES (5/17-18)

Day 1: Sonora Pass

Goal 1: Mt. Leavitt, 11, 569', and Y Couloir (look for the "Y" in the top middle)

Hiking up Mt. Leavitt.

Me, dropping into the left arm of the Y from the summit of Mt. Leavitt.

My next turn.

Casey ripping down the Y.

Done and done.

Goal 2: Deadman's Couloir

I was able to get this photo because I was about to die and everybody in the group passed me up.

I felt better when my skis were on and pointed downhill though.

Matt coming down Deadman's.

Chris.

Casey.

Chris hiking out with Deadman's in the background.

Casey avoiding certain death: a subsurface torrent.

Waiting to hitch a ride up to the top of the pass.

Day 2: Tioga Pass. Gas prices = stupid.

Mobil Gas Station's Whoa Nelli Deli = crazy good. It's only open seasonally, it's in the middle of nowhere (near Mono Lake, actually), and it's part of a gas station, but for some reason this place offers incredible food. I had fish tacos and a mango margarita Saturday and lobster taquitos and a local draught beer on Sunday. Very highly recommended.

Kel skinning up toward False White with Mt. Dana in the background.

Looking east toward Nevada, Mono Lake, and Mo Mart.

Me skiing.

Me skinning.

Skiing again.

Driving home via 395.

Epilogue: When you go to the beach, the sand gets everywhere. When you go to the snow in May, the sun gets everywhere. I'm actually sunburned inside my ears and nostrils. Gross and painful, yet true. I'm hungry for more skiing though. Next up: Shasta.

Awesome photos! You have a good eye for photography.

I am looking forward to getting out to California and being able to see some of those wide open spaces. God love the Northeast, but it's a little crowded.

Thanks. A super-cool road trip here would be to start in LA and ride the PCH up the coast to SF. And then, from SF, cut through Yosemite via Sonora or Tioga Pass and then ride the 395 down the eastern side of the Sierras. You'd pretty much see the whole gamut of what CA has to offer, and the views would be jaw-dropping.

So, are you officially coming here yet?

Oh, yeah. It's pretty much official now.

Last time I was out there we drove down 5 from the Bay area to LA, then took 101 on the way back. If we'd had more time, we definitely would have done more scenic routes.

Very cool and congratulations. Sorry if I missed the announcement. I try to keep up with LJ happenings, but occasionally I'll miss a few days.

I've taken the 5 between here and LA several dozen times. It's pretty much the most unscenic road in CA, but it does have the advantage of having a virtual 90 mph speed limit.

Anyhow, if you have any questions about the area, pop me an email. I'd be happy to (try) to answer them.

Actually, you commented on the post where I mentioned it first. But I can imagine how other things than my moving plans might take priority in your brain, so it's cool.

I will definitely have questions to ask, don't worry about that!

Sorry, I thought that it was merely likely at that time. The law has corrupted the memory files of my brain.

Great pictures!! Isn't spring skiing great?? Snowbird has gotten like 20" in the last 2 days here. They are still open this weekend. Fairly unusual to have fresh snow for Memorial day, but I'm sure many will take advantage of it.
